The town grew in the 19th century with ironstone quarrying, clothing and footwear factories opening. It is now a thriving light-industrial town with high-profile national companies like Versalift and Abbeyboard based there.
However, the town’s growth has put pressure on local health services. In the past it was not uncommon to find a queue of people outside the Town Surgery in Osborne House at the cross in the High Street. It was not uncommon for the doctor to be called from Kettering to attend an accident victim or other urgent need.
In 1970 a new Health Centre was opened on the south side of Higham Road to accommodate growing demand for health care in the town. It was not until recently that the town’s problems with its GP service came to light. It was recently rated as inadequate by the Care Quality Commission, with phone access being a particular problem for patients.
However, NHS England says it has taken steps to address the issue, and the practice is continuing to work closely with Nene Clinical Commissioning Group to take forward further improvements. The practice is also working to increase capacity at the surgery by introducing additional appointments in the evenings and at weekends. Patients on repeat medication should book an appointment with a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse to have their prescription reviewed. It is possible for patients to choose to have their prescription sent directly to their chemist (provided that they are registered with them), avoiding the need to come into the surgery and saving time and inconvenience.
